When Faith Meets Pedagogy 2018 Conference

2018 WFMP eposter 004 page 001The Catholic Curriculum Corporation’s annual When Faith Meets Pedagogy 2018 conference will be taking place from Thursday, October 25 to Saturday, October 27 at the Delta by Marriott by the Toronto Airport. The conference is a gathering for those involved in Catholic education at all levels.

Michael Bator, Executive Director of the Catholic Curriculum Corporation (CCC) for the past nine years, says that the event was formed in order to help develop uniquely Catholic educational resources.

“It helps ensure that teachers working in publicly-funded Catholic schools are receiving the type of professional development to support the resources that might be developed by individual boards and/or by the Catholic Curriculum Corporation itself,” he said.

Dr. Nuala Kenny will be opening this year’s conference on Thursday evening as one of the keynote speakers. She is a medical doctor, a member of the Sisters of Charity of Halifax, Emeritus Professor of Bio-ethics at Dalhousie University, and a policy advisor to the Catholic Health Alliance of Canada.

“She will be talking about issues related to youth and their understanding of mental health, along with recent government initiatives in the area of assisted suicide,” said Mr. Bator.

The second keynote speaker will be The Most Reverend Gerard P. Bergie, Bishop of St. Catharines, who will be speaking on Friday morning. He is also the Head of the Education Commission of the Assembly of Catholic Bishops of Ontario. He will be speaking to the most recently posted pastoral letter posted by the Bishops of Ontario back in late May.

“Between the key elements of the conference, there will be over 60 workshops provided by professional educators, classroom teachers in particular,” explained Mr. Bator. “We will also have two teacher speakers, as well as a vendor fair.”

The event attracts about 1200 delegates each year. Most of those attendees are from Ontario, but educators come from across the country. They’ve even had delegates from as far away as Australia and Brazil. It is the largest gathering of Catholic educators in Canada.
